The backlink building is an important part of Off-page SEO. The backlinks support the website to rank to the first position of the Search Engine Result Page. Nowadays, the number of backlinks does not matter in the ranking of the website but the quality of the backlink does. According to the algorithm of Google, the websites with the unnatural backlinks will not be ranked.




Un-natural backlinks are the links which are relevant to the content. As some years before, when Google came with a Panda update, the website with plagiarised and duplicate content have been downranked or suspended. So they were just focusing on the number of backlinks and their websites were also ranked at that time. So according to the Penguin update, the backlinks made should be relevant to the content of the website. Some of the important point we should keep in mind while making backlinks are:-
1. The website from which we are taking backlink should have high domain authority and high page authority ie high DA and PA.
2. The website should show some relevance to our website.
3. Don't build backlinks from the other 18+ sites.
4. Use the Google Disavow tool to remove harmful backlinks.

You should get rid of the harmful backlinks produced by your competitor to down-rank you by the Google Disavow tool. It helps to remove the harmful backlinks that were linked to your website. 
Check your website backlinks at a period of time. Some of the links are spammy and can down-rank your website.
